NHS Dean Street won Interior Sign of the Year in 2014

Signs have always been produced for use inside buildings, but the continuous development of technology and materials means that the sign makers of today have the potential to influence virtually every aspect of an interior design.

Signs, as we know them, still plays a vital interior role, but increasingly sign businesses are called to use their skills and expertise to create graphics for walls, ceilings and even floors, as well as manifestations on windows, doors, partitions and room dividers.

One industry insider  says that the way ‘décor’ – the use of bespoke designed and printed wallpapers and textiles – is beginning to move, it will one day be bigger than vehicle wrapping.

Materials available to sign makers to achieve distinctive interiors range from the latest vinyls, textiles and acrylics, custom-designed and printed to meet specific design briefs, to traditional wood, stone glass, and metals.

The potential is virtually limitless and the ‘Interiors Award’ in this year’s British Sign Awards, which is sponsored by Metamark, will go to a sign business that has combined  technology and materials with inherent sign making skills to contribute to the creation of an outstanding interior scheme.

Sheffield Childrens Eye Hospital took the award in 2015

For the past two years, this award has been won by projects associated with the field of medicine – in one instance the sign maker’s skills were used to create a welcoming ambience in a health clinic whilst in the other wall and ceiling graphics were created to make a children’s hospital friendlier and less frightening while actually helping the medics in their diagnostic work.

Both provided excellent examples of how sign makers are now contributing to the creation of exciting and different interiors.

Any sign business that has produced outstanding  work for an interior – whether in a hospital, school, college, corporate office, leisure centre or, indeed any type of building – should enter.

Potential entrants should also note that they can enter a project for as many awards as they like.  An outstanding interiors project may also be suitable, for example, for entry for the retail, leisure or wide format awards.  The entry form and full details on how to enter can be found at www.britishsignawards.org   Entry is free and is open to all UK-based sign businesses.
