Apogee Print’s high gloss black wrap with chrome detailing of an HGV tractor unit to create a flagship vehicle for a scaffolding company. Apogee transformed a dull white cab into a gleaming statement vehicle and what really impressed the judges was their enormous attention to detail.
About William Smith
Established as a foundry in 1832, William Smith has evolved through change and market adaption to become the UK’s longest established and arguably the most successful trade supplier of wide-ranging sign and graphics solutions. Early success emanated from its strong links with the local authority sector to which it supplied a range of cast metal road maintenance equipment and for which it subsequently provided metal road signs.
Entry into the embryonic sign industry in 1964 coincided with the introduction of new road traffic sign regulations, as a result of which a then revolutionary new vinyl material developed by 3M would henceforth be used for sign faces, letters and symbols to replace the existing cast metal painted signs. It also marked the beginning of a remarkable business association with 3M which remains to this day as probably the UK sign industry’s most enduring and successful partnership and one which in consequence has established William Smith as the largest UK stockist and distributor of premium-grade 3M materials.
In 2003, the company decided to split its core activities into three distinct divisions (materials supply, signs and display and hardware), leading to a considerably increased turnover and commensurate profitability. This was and remains most noticeable in the materials supply division.
An enlarged stockholding facility, the acquisition of distribution rights for additional leading brands, including Contra Vision, Arlon and R Tape, plus ongoing sales and marketing initiatives, have helped fuel further growth at William Smith. Having pioneered the use of vinyl materials in the road traffic signs sector in collaboration with its primary supplier 3M, the company has become a driving force behind and principal supplier to the now burgeoning vehicle wrapping sector, advancing the technology from the application of simple text and basic graphic manifestations to full vehicle wraps using the latest digital printing processes and materials. These are now widely evident in the commercial fleet transport industry where most of the leading brands have adopted the technology as a more cost-effective and reliable alternative to traditional painted graphics. Sponsorship of the Vehicle Graphic of the Year Award in the 2014 British Sign Awards is therefore both timely and appropriate.
Supporting its wide range of vehicle wrapping solutions, primarily those based on 3M materials that are backed by among the most comprehensive performance warranties currently available, William Smith runs a series of Vehicle Wrap Training Courses at its facility in Barnard Castle, County Durham. The company has also introduced a range of tools and accessories to assist and improve the application and purposeful removal of the vehicle wrapping materials it supplies to its trade customers. Included in the range of products is a specially designed Essential Tool Kit Bundle that is available at an exceptionally attractive price
